Text Box: When Thomas Cross moved to the Remus, Michigan area from Ohio in 1869, he was already established as an accomplished deacon.
Around the beginning of 1879, Thomas gathered a group of area residents together to worship God. The first church services were held at the Gingrich School and the Cross School. This was the beginning of the Wheatland Church of Christ. As time went on, Thomas felt the need for a church to worship in. He and Alexander Harper, brother of Catherine Harper Cross, organized what is known as a “BEE” to erect the church building. The church was built on the Southwest corner of State Road and M-66. Alexander was instrumental in the building of the church. Thomas furnished money to help complete the building. He took out a mortgage for the money, which was soon repaid by various fund-raising projects by the ladies of the church and of the community.
The church was called at that time “Disciple of Christ Church”. It later was referred to as the Cross Church. The name of the church today is the Wheatland Church of Christ. Thomas was ordained as the first elder of the church in 1876. Alexander was ordained as the first deacon of the church.
Near the beginning of 1870, the congregation was organized with six members: Thomas W. and Catherine Harper Cross and daughter, Elizabeth; Alexander and Susan Cummings Harper; and Cynthia Rice. As time went by the membership increased. The church records give the following names: Hemminger, Nisonger Lett, Guy, Lenon, Norman, Humphrey, Scott Cummings, and Harper.
Thomas Cross’s goal was “to organize and build up the cause in Wheatland Township, where primitive Christianity, particularly its gospel purity and simplicity, was unknown” according to a verbatim historical account by Elizabeth Cross, one of the six original members of the church.
