1869—2007

Thomas W. Cross Army Service Years

Text Box: On June 22, 1863, Thomas enlisted into the Army, in Athens, Ohio. He spent almost three years with the Wagner Co. C5 Regiment, United States Colored Infantry of the Civil War. He served with the Ambulance Detail in Virginia and the Carolinas. He received one-half the pay rate of a white soldier because he was colored. Thomas mustered out of the Army on September 20, 1865. He returned to Ohio and lived there until 1869.
Text Box: In Washington D. C. a monument honoring the United States Colored Troops that served in the Civil War.
We visited this monument two years ago in Washington D. C., and was very impressed and moved. We found Great-Grandpa Cross’s name along with other names that were familiar.
